Mid Atlantic , 2021

These images are the visual record of a five day walk between New York City and Philadelphia. The project stemmed from a desire to investigate the transition out of America’s largest metropolis, into New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Growing up on the West Coast, the Mid-Atlantic region was largely unknown to me, and I was particularly interested in exploring how far New York’s gravitational force lasts as you move south of the city. With limited resources for pedestrians, let alone long-distance walkers, most of the route went along the sides of roads, through suburban and historic towns, across bedroom communities and trailer parks. These photographs are not expressly documentary; they are the translation of an experience moving through an interstitial landscape. Many thanks to Colin for being foolhardy enough to take on this walk; hopefully it is the start of traversing the entire East Coast.
